Book Review: Throne of Glass

throne of glass

What a book! I haven’t read something this mind-bending in quite awhile. I thought it was one thing but turned out to be so much more, I can’t get enough.

Throne of Glass follows the story of Celaena, a renowned assassin, and her journey to becoming the King’s Champion. Maybe. There is, naturally, a competition, a secret one, in which she must compete to hold this prestigious spot in court. Oh and did I mention it’s all for a king that she can’t stand? One who ordered the murder of people she loved?

Celaena has to use an alias, flirt with the crown Prince, and avoid being murdered all at the same time. Not to mention when she meets a princess from another country and actually befriends her. Not only are people in the competition trying to take her out but there is also something creepy lurking about the castle, murdering the contestants one by one.

Celaena is a total badass who even at her weakest could kill a man with her bare hands. When she first arrives, barely human at all, the king is disappointed. And staying in the middle of the pack for training and competition isn’t helping her reputation. Afraid to let her really shine and reveal her history, she must form an uneasy alliance with the Captain of the Guard.

The story is compelling, the writing is very well done, and the characters (while not completely fresh) have amazing depth and personality. Even the most minor of roles has more to them than they want you to believe. Court intrigue, brutal conquering methods, and a brewing rebellion all give perspective and context to this fantastic story. This new realm is complex and founded by Fae, making it even more interesting. There is history and connections yet to be found while it took me quite a few days to read it, that wasn’t for lack of interest, I simply had to put it down at night in order to get some sleep.

If you want a powerful heroine who doesn’t completely shuck the womanly ideals but is a strong person in her own right, if you want a land that has more to it than meets the eye, and if you want a mysterious love connection, then this is the book for you. Celeana is a powerhouse and I can’t wait to help solve the mystery of what’s really going on in this kingdom.
