I love this question! In short my answer is yes. No pain, no gain.
I personally believe that in order to obtain (and appreciate) true greatness, one must have gone through some sort of struggle or hardship. Let me further define this by saying that “greatness” doesn’t mean being wealthy. It’s more about being a good person and one who is rich in other ways than money. Most of the best people (some of whom also happen to be wealthy) were affected by something in their lives that made them into the person they are which in turn made them become a better person, a great person who has value add in the world.
